Four cableways, three stations, 2,000 metres of climb

From Engelberg at 1,003 m the eight-seater TITLIS Xpress gondola takes you to Trübsee in around ten minutes and on to Stand station in another ten. There you change to the TITLIS Rotair, the world's first rotating cableway, in service since 1992: five minutes to the top station at 3,020 m, and the cabin turns once around itself on the way. The operator reckons around 30 minutes for the whole way from Engelberg.

Rule of thumb: Half Fare Card, GA and Swiss Travel Pass give 50 per cent, so CHF 51 for the return. The Lucerne Travel Pass is worth 100 per cent. Children aged 6 to 15 pay half, and with a Junior Card they ride free. None of this applies to the Ice Flyer: it costs CHF 12 extra, for everyone.

The return ticket includes the Cliff Walk and the glacier cave. Since August 2026 you can reserve a free boarding time for the second section from Trübsee in the operator's shop; it is not a ticket, but it secures your onward ride when it is busy.

Honestly: The Rotair, the mountain's showpiece, is closed for overhaul from 17 August to 11 December 2026. Until then the new TITLIS Connect shuttle cableway runs from Stand to the summit. The mountain is reachable, the ticket costs the same, so the operator refunds nothing. If you are coming for the rotating cabin, wait until December.

Getting there from Lucerne: 43 minutes by train, by bus in autumn 2026

The Zentralbahn's Lucerne–Engelberg Express runs from Lucerne station via Stans, Dallenwil and Grafenort to Engelberg in 43 minutes. From December 2026 it runs every half hour; to make that possible the Zentralbahn is building a double-track section between Stans and Dallenwil this autumn. What that means for travellers:

The replacement buses partly leave from different places than the trains, and they do not carry bicycles. The Zentralbahn recommends checking every connection in the online timetable before travelling and allowing more time. At peak times, since May 2026, direct buses also run from Wolfenschiessen via Grafenort and Engelberg station to the Titlis valley station – so the walk from the station falls away. In Engelberg itself the local bus takes you to the valley stations free of charge.

Rule of thumb: For the last ascent to Titlis at 15:30 you need to be at the valley station by 15:00. Without rail replacement that works out as a train from Lucerne no later than 14:00. With replacement buses, allow half an hour more.

By car it is 30 minutes from Lucerne according to the tourist office: A2 to Stans Süd, then 20 kilometres of main road. Parking at the valley station is paid; the cableways run 365 days a year, but individual sections close for maintenance on weekdays: the second section from 31 August to 11 September, the first from 26 to 31 October 2026, each covered by the parallel line.

Buying the ticket: operator, euros or tour

The Engelberg – Titlis return ticket costs CHF 102 in the operator's shop. If you book in euros or want the transfer from Lucerne included, there are three routes, none of them cheaper than the operator:

Honestly: €121.10 is more than the operator's CHF 102 – the mark-up pays the platform. Worth it only if you book on GetYourGuide anyway and hold no pass. Check before buying whether the Ice Flyer is included; with the operator it is not.

Honestly: In autumn 2026 the tour has a point: the coach drives past the rail replacement straight to the valley station. Otherwise, train plus operator ticket costs noticeably less, and with a pass you ride for CHF 51.

At the top: suspension bridge, glacier cave, Ice Flyer, Titlis Tower

The Klein Titlis top station sits at 3,020 m; the actual Titlis summit is higher at 3,239 m and has no cableway. Three things are reachable on foot from the station. The Cliff Walk crosses the south face at 3,041 m to the top station of the Ice Flyer, 150 steps long, open all year and included in the ticket. The glacier cave lies ten metres below the glacier surface, is 150 metres long and shows ice up to 5,000 years old – also included. The Ice Flyer, a six-seater chairlift over the crevasses, costs CHF 12 extra and runs from 09:30 to 16:00; in summer it takes you to the glacier park, which is open only until 15:30.

New is the TITLIS Tower at 3,020 m, converted from the old transmitter mast to plans by Herzog & de Meuron, with the Horizon Deck viewing platform and a restaurant. The Horizon Deck is a separate ticket. Until 2029 the operator is rebuilding the top station into the new Peak Station; until then there are altered walkways, construction noise and temporary facilities at Trübsee. The attractions stay open, according to the operator.

Honestly: The Cliff Walk and Ice Flyer close in bad weather, and there is no money back for that. At 3,000 metres that is not an exception. Looking at the operator's webcams in the morning is the cheapest part of the day.

Trübsee: the stopover the ticket allows

Trübsee station at 1,764 m sits by the lake of the same name, and your Titlis ticket lets you get off on the way up or down. A circular path around the lake, rowing boats, a zipline and a playground in summer, plus a self-service restaurant. If you only want to come this far, the return costs CHF 38. The chairlift to the Jochpass, 15 minutes' walk from the lake, has its own fare.

Titlis, Pilatus or Rigi?

Three mountains, three answers. Titlis is the highest and the only one with a glacier and snow in August; it costs CHF 102, CHF 51 with a pass, and needs the longest approach from Lucerne. Pilatus is the mountain for the cogwheel railway, CHF 84, CHF 42 with a pass, right outside town. Rigi is the mountain for Swiss Travel Pass holders: free, all year, by boat. If you want to see snow, go up Titlis. If you want to ride a railway, go up Pilatus. If you want to pay nothing, go up Rigi.

Rule of thumb: With a Half Fare Card or pass, Titlis and Rigi combine into two days from Lucerne without any mountain railway costing full price. Pilatus remains the dearest ride of the three, even with a pass.
