Europe's highest railway station sits in the rock between the Mönch and the Jungfrau. From Interlaken it is 2,886 metres of climb and a good hour and a half – here is what that costs in 2026, which card halves the price and when you are better off staying down.

Three pieces of advice before you start
Check the webcam first, then buy.
A webshop ticket can only be returned free of charge until 23:59 the day before. On the day of travel itself there is no money back – not even if everything up there is white.
Do the sums on the Half Fare Card.
With a Halbtax or Swiss Half Fare Card you pay CHF 140.60 from Interlaken instead of CHF 271.20. The one-month card for visitors costs CHF 150 – it has almost paid for itself after this one trip.
Take a jacket, even in August.
The operator expects temperatures below freezing at the top in summer as in winter. Jacket, closed shoes, hat, gloves, sunglasses.
Fog below, blue above.The Eiger Express lifts you to 2,320 m in 15 minutes – 26 seats per cabin, the north face of the Eiger outside the window.
Where are you starting from?
The higher up you board, the cheaper the ticket – but you pay for getting there as well. Four starting points, four sets of sums.
Interlaken Ost: one ticket, two changes
The Bernese Oberland Railway runs from Interlaken Ost station to Grindelwald Terminal. There you change to the Eiger Express, and at Eigergletscher to the Jungfrau Railway. On 24 September 2026 the first train left at 07:04, then every 30 minutes until 15:34; you arrive at the top after 1 hour 37 minutes. If you come by car, the operator recommends the park and ride in Matten bei Interlaken.

From Interlaken: Guided Tour to Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe
Honestly: The route is signposted and the changes are easy. If you have a Half Fare Card, the operator's ticket costs CHF 140.60 – the guided tour is then almost double. It is only worth it if having a guide is worth that much to you. The plain train ticket can also be bought in advance in euros – the comparison is under Jungfraujoch tickets.
Grindelwald Terminal: at the top in 45 minutes
From the Terminal (943 m) the Eiger Express runs straight to Eigergletscher, where the Jungfrau Railway is waiting. The operator reckons on 45 minutes each way, around 50 with the change, and recommends at least three and a half to four and a half hours for the whole outing. Via Kleine Scheidegg on the Wengernalp Railway it takes 1 hour 26 minutes from Grindelwald.

Honestly: The CHF 22 difference from Interlaken is exactly the price of the train from Interlaken to Grindelwald and back. If you are staying in Interlaken, starting in Grindelwald saves you nothing – only if you are staying there anyway. And while you are there: Grindelwald First is on the other side of the valley.
Lauterbrunnen and Wengen: the old route via Kleine Scheidegg
From Lauterbrunnen (795 m) the Wengernalp Railway climbs via Wengen (1,274 m) to Kleine Scheidegg at 2,061 m. There you change to the Jungfrau Railway. The operator gives around 90 minutes for this route from Lauterbrunnen, including the change.

Honestly: This is the same train ticket, just through an agent. Before booking, compare it with the operator's CHF 260 – and with a Half Fare Card (CHF 135) the Jungfrau Railways ticket office is the better address anyway.

From Lucerne: Day Trip to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe
Honestly: Without a Half Fare Card you pay CHF 271.20 for the mountain ticket from Interlaken alone, and the train from Zurich comes on top – so the tour is reasonably priced. Which card do you have in your pocket?
At the Jungfraujoch it is not the departure point that decides the price but the card. Tell the calculator where you start, when you travel and who is coming – it adds it all up, in Swiss francs (CHF), not euros.

Three sums the ticket office won't do for you
Rule of thumb: If you are coming from abroad, have no card and are travelling in Switzerland for longer than this one day, buy the Swiss Half Fare Card for CHF 150 first – and then the ticket.
Two adults, two children (8 and 12), high season, no card: 2 × 271.20 + 2 × 30 = CHF 602.40. With two Half Fare Cards: 2 × 140.60 + 2 × 30 = CHF 341.20. With Junior Cards (CHF 30 per child at any SBB station) the children travel free, and at the Jungfraujoch only the reservation remains: CHF 301.20 plus CHF 60 for the two cards.
On your own, no card, a week in Switzerland: The Swiss Half Fare Card saves CHF 130.60 on this one trip and costs CHF 150. Every further train journey – starting with the trip to Interlaken – puts it in profit.
Three days in the region, Jungfrau Travel Pass: CHF 210 for the pass plus the CHF 89 connecting ticket makes CHF 299 – more than the single ticket. The pass only pays off if you also ride up Harder Kulm (CHF 44 on its own), First (CHF 82) or Schynige Platte (CHF 68) on the other days – all three are included in the pass. Honestly: The calculator leaves out the Good Morning Ticket. The operator states 20% off the full fare and “from CHF 190.40”, but no price per departure point – if you travel early and have no card, ask for it specifically when you buy. All prices by departure point are on Jungfraujoch prices, buying on Jungfraujoch tickets.
From here it goes into the mountain.Behind it the Eiger and Mönch. The Jungfrau Railway has been running through both since 1912.
Two ways to Eigergletscher.
Fast by cable car or slow by cog railway – both end at the Jungfrau Railway. You can also go up one way and down the other; the boarding time on your ticket applies at Grindelwald Terminal or at Kleine Scheidegg, not at your departure station. Set off from there at least 30 minutes earlier.

According to the operator, the fast route Interlaken Ost – Grindelwald Terminal – Eigergletscher – Jungfraujoch is step-free. For the route via Kleine Scheidegg, wheelchair users have to register by phone beforehand. Dogs travel free as far as Eigergletscher; for the last section and back the dog ticket costs CHF 30 and is only available at the ticket office.
26 minutes of tunnel, five minutes of Eismeer.
The Jungfrau Railway has been running through the Eiger and Mönch since 1912. On the way it stops for five minutes at Eismeer station at around 3,160 m – windows in the rock, glacier behind them.
Reservation: From 1 May to 31 October 2026 the seat reservation is compulsory for this section, CHF 10 per person for the return journey, children included. In winter it is optional; without it you wait for the next train when it is busy. Passengers with a reservation follow the blue signs and have to be through the turnstile at least ten minutes before departure.
This is what you go up for.
What waits at the top is not a summit but a saddle of ice – and a station in the rock with a viewing terrace, restaurants and a walk-through circuit. The operator reckons on about a quarter of an hour for each stop on it.

From the Sphinx terrace you look out over the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps: 22 km long, up to 900 m thick. On the plateau you stand in the snow, the Ice Palace is a circuit with ice sculptures inside the glacier, and “Alpine Sensation” tells the story of how the railway was built. The Snow Fun Park with its zip line is open from 4 May to 18 October in 2026, several restaurants all year round. Including the journey from Grindelwald, allow at least three and a half to four and a half hours, via Kleine Scheidegg five to six.
Is the Jungfraujoch worth it?
A day that can cost more than CHF 500 for two people deserves an honest answer. It depends on three things: visibility, health, card.

- the webcam at the top shows blue sky. Then, according to the operator, the view reaches as far as the Black Forest and the Vosges.
- you have a Half Fare Card or a GA travelcard. CHF 140.60 or CHF 126.60 is a different outing from CHF 271.20.
- you go early. The first two connections are the Good Morning Ticket ones – with 20% off for everyone without a card.
Stay down if …
- the Joch is in cloud. CHF 271.20 for white is too much, and on the day of travel there is no money back. Harder Kulm, at CHF 44 return (CHF 22 with a Half Fare Card), is the smaller risk.
- you have a cold or trouble with your heart or lungs. The operator then expressly advises against it – likewise from the seventh month of pregnancy and with children under two. Altitude sickness can occur from 2,500 m; if you have symptoms, only a quick descent helps.
- you only have two hours. Under three and a half hours from Grindelwald it becomes a rush.

Honestly: The funicular up Harder Kulm costs CHF 44 return from the operator, the First gondola from Grindelwald CHF 76, half that in each case with a Half Fare Card (Jungfrau Railways price calculator for 24 September 2026). You do not need an agent for either – compare before you book.
