The route is always the same: via Interlaken Ost

Whether you start in Zurich, Lucerne, Bern or Basel – all trains come together at Interlaken Ost. There you board the Bernese Oberland Railway. It splits on the way: one portion of the train goes to Grindelwald, the other to Lauterbrunnen. For the fastest route, take the Grindelwald portion and get off one stop before the village, at Grindelwald Terminal. From there the Eiger Express gondola glides up to Eigergletscher, and the Jungfrau Railway covers the last section through the mountain.

The second route runs via Lauterbrunnen and the cog railway via Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg. It takes hardly any longer, but you sit in one and the same cog railway all the way to Kleine Scheidegg. You can go up one way and down the other – check when you buy whether your ticket covers both routes.

For comparison, the feeder trains alone: Zurich HB–Interlaken Ost takes 1:58 hours, Lucerne–Interlaken Ost 1:48 hours, each without a change if you catch the direct train.

Jungfraujoch from Zurich: can it be done in a day?

Yes, but be honest with the sums. 3:40 hours there, 3:40 hours back – that is a good seven hours on the train. If you leave Zurich at 07:01, you are at the top at 10:41. If you stay three hours, you are back in Zurich in the early evening. It works because Swiss connections are timed to meet each other: in the timetable query, every connection that morning came to exactly 3:40 hours.

Rule of thumb: In Zurich, take the train on the hour. It runs to Interlaken Ost without a change – you change only three times in total instead of four or five.

Honestly: A day trip from Zurich is a bet on the weather. You buy an expensive ticket and sit on the train for seven hours – if the Joch is in cloud, you see a white wall at the top. If you can, stay a night in Interlaken, Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen and decide in the morning with a look at the webcam.

Jungfraujoch from Lucerne

From Lucerne, at 3:35 hours, you are actually five minutes faster than from Zurich, and you only ever change three times. The train to Interlaken Ost runs hourly at six minutes past the hour and takes 1:48 hours – the line goes over the Brünig Pass and along Lake Brienz. With the 07:06 train you are on the Joch at 10:41.

From Interlaken, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen

From here the Jungfraujoch is a normal outing. From Interlaken Ost a train leaves every 30 minutes, and you are at the top in 1:37 hours. From Grindelwald village the quickest way is the local bus to the Terminal (1:16 hours); the cog railway via Kleine Scheidegg takes 1:26 hours with only one change. From Lauterbrunnen it takes 1:41 hours with a single change at Kleine Scheidegg.

The operator gives 45 minutes for the section Grindelwald Terminal–Jungfraujoch. In the timetable for 29 September 2026 the 08:16 connection was shown at 55 minutes – better to plan with that.
